Dear Friends of CHC:

While the official release date has yet to be announced, a select audience in LA will be screening season two of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why this weekend, and buzz about the series abounds.

Following significant concerns from the mental health community about last season’s glamorization of suicide and ignored trigger warnings, Netflix commissioned a study by the Northwestern University Center on Media and Human Development to better understand its impact on viewers. The result? The majority of parents felt that the topics were important but they wanted more resources from Netflix.

In response, Netflix will be airing a video of cast members prior to each episode, warning that the series depicts sexual assault, substance abuse and suicide, and to avoid the show or watch with a trusted adult if you struggle with any of these issues.

For a preview of 13 Reasons Why season 2 content, see the trailer. Netflix has also added resources to 13reasonswhy.info to help facilitate conversations between parents and teenagers, and includes contact information for Crisis Text Line and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Will it be enough?

Last year, CHC’s community call to action was this: if your teen is watching the show, please watch it with them and talk about it. We hope you’ll do the same this season. And please remember that CHC is here for you and your family. Learn more about our teen therapy and resources.

Please feel free to share this information widely. We value the input of our community and look forward to continuing to work together for the well being of our youth.
