CHC’s Breakfast Event Brings Tears, Laughter, and Gratitude
On May 3, 2023, a sold-out crowd gathered at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club for the 10th Annual CHC Breakfast. Benefiting CHC’s free programs and financial assistance for youth mental health and learning differences, the morning began with personal and heartfelt testimonials from CHC Board Members and Breakfast Co-Chairs, Ben Choi and Shami Ravi. Each found their way to CHC via different paths, and have since become actively involved in the agency as parents and volunteers.
“There were so many caring adults at CHC that poured themselves into each of our boys over this past decade,” said Choi. “We’re so grateful to CHC for being with us on that journey. I’m glad that CHC is here and that it strives to serve more children, more teens and more young adults every year.”
Ravi also shared her experience, “The gift that CHC gave to our family was normalizing the conversation in our home around mental health and wellness. I don’t think that’s a conversation we would’ve had in my home seven years ago, and for that I’m ever grateful.”
The theme of this year’s Breakfast, “Your Roadmap for Raising Thriving Youth,” was born from the shared reality that raising kids in today’s world is a challenging journey, and having a destination and a roadmap can be invaluable. Christine Carter, PhD, well-known author, speaker and coach, shared thoughts from her recent book, The New Adolescence, including tips on how to support young people in these complex and modern times. With her keen sense of humor, Dr. Carter offered advice as both a parent and a professional, delivering a combination of scientific research, relatable anecdotes and practical applications.
Dr. Carter’s talk was followed by an informative and engaging conversation with CHC’s Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Ramsey Khasho, providing guests with an in-depth reflection of the challenges families face today and encouraging parents to “be the coach and not the manager” with their teens.
Attendees also had the opportunity to view CHC client experiences in a video testimonial that touched everyone in the room, a reminder of the life-changing impact that CHC makes.
CHC Board Chair, Julie Terrell Hooper MSW, summed up the feelings felt among the audience and expressed her gratitude to the families that shared their testimonials. “It takes a tremendous amount of courage to tell stories like that. But those are the stories that we understand – they inspire us and encourage us. It also makes very real for all of us what CHC really does. It’s very obvious the need is there and that CHC has the expertise and the care to do that.”
Thank you to the CHC Breakfast Honorary Committee, Sponsors, and individual supporters for making this day possible, and our deepest gratitude to a generous anonymous donor who offered to match every gift made to CHC through the end of May.
