For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, local teen Lavanya Kannan chose to tackle an issue that she has personal experience with, invisible disabilities.
As Kannan explains:
… There are thousands of people with disabilities. These include the physical ones and the invisible ones. The invisible ones are often hard for people to see . . .and are not understood easily. Some of these disabilities include ADHD, anxiety, depression, and anorexia, to name a few.
Lavanya created a video called Raising Awareness of Invisible Disabilities in which teens share their authentic stories about their own hidden disabilities and how those challenges have impacted their lives—the struggles and the successes. The video closes with some recommendations on how friends, families, educators, and the community can be supportive of those and help reduce stigma.
