Diverse BookFinder (DBF) is a comprehensive collection of children’s picture books featuring Black and Indigenous people and People of Color (BIPOC).
DBF aspires to be a go-to resource for librarians, educators, publishers, creators, and parents who seek to create collections in which all children can see themselves —and each other—reflected in the picture books they read.
What is included?
Diverse BookFinder is a portfolio of resources:
- The Picture Book Collection, a physical collection of more than 3000 diverse books. Anyone can check these books out at any time through Interlibrary Loan.
- The Diverse BookFinder itself, a public database. Designed to mirror the ever-growing Picture Book Collection, the Diverse BookFinder makes diverse picture books findable by both the human characteristics and, importantly, narrative messages that recur in them.
- The Collection Analysis Tool, which enables librarians and other book curators to understand how diversity is represented in their own picture book collections.
More About Diverse BookFinder
Diverse BookFinder collects all depictions of Black and Indigenous people and People of Color (BIPOC) in mainstream picture books published or distributed in the U.S. since 2002.
Note: Diverse Bookfinder intentionally does not curate their books so they can get the broader picture of how people are represented. In their own words, Diverse BookFinder is “a research collection, not a list of recommended titles.”
Diverse BookFinder does, however, regularly highlight books related to trending topics (e.g. activism, holidays, etc.) or meaningful trends as they become apparent in the DBF collection. Learn more about the criteria Diverse BookFinder uses to build their collection.
