What is cultural humility and why does it matter? As parents, we are our children’s first teachers. It is from us that our kids learn how to be accepting and respectful of those from diverse backgrounds.

In this Voices of Compassion episode, Tony Cepeda, LMFT, Clinical Program Manager at CHC, will teach us how to listen and learn from our hearts. In the end, we may find that we have more similarities than differences.

As our children develop their own identities, it’s up to parents to teach them how to interact with other cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. It all starts with self-reflection, developing an understanding of our own cultural beliefs and biases. From there, we can acknowledge the history of systemic oppression against minority cultures, developing compassion and empathy along the way. Finally, and with humility, we can begin to challenge our conscious and unconscious biases. Tony Cepeda, LMFT, teaches us how to encourage our children’s curiosity at home, in order to foster respect and understanding of the world at-large.
